Men: Meet the Basics of Skincare

Men's Skincare and Health in Fort Mill, SC

Growing up, boys aren’t taught to take care of their skin the way girls are.

In fact, most boys hear the basics:  Wash your face, wash your hands, and get the grime off.  Then come to the dinner table.

As adults, men are learning that they really should take care of themselves and their appearance. Self-care is not “girly” care; it’s good health and hygiene care. There’s nothing wrong with looking younger, living a healthier lifestyle, and gaining confidence.

Men aren’t shy about hiring a trainer at the gym or following a diet; they shouldn’t be shy about asking an esthetician to teach them the ropes of skin care.  A good esthetician can simplify what seems daunting and help you cut to the chase.  She can assess your skin, properly diagnose your needs, devise a plan, and make informed product choices.

An esthetician begins with the basics: how to cleanse, exfoliate, correct, and protect. Now, let’s define the terms.

Cleanse

Commit to washing your face AM and PM.  Use something other than Dial, Irish Spring, or Dove. Use a cleanser that strikes a balance between cleansing power and gentleness, preferably a medical grade product that includes more key ingredients in higher proportions than an OTC product.  Medical grade products can be found in physician offices or medical aesthetic spas with an MD /Medical Director at the helm.  They are not found at the mall, CVS, Walgreens, or Target. Our office carries ZO, SkinCeuticals, and select products from Alastin and Skinbetter, suitable for both men and women. Men's Skincare and Health in Fort Mill, SC

Exfoliate

This term refers to the removal of dead skin cells from the skin. Usually recommended two to three times per week, men take care of this step with a daily shave. They can also combine exfoliation with cleansing by using a product that performs both functions.  The smoother the skin, the more easily products will penetrate the skin barrier to correct and protect.

Correct and Protect

Most important is a moisturizer that hydrates the skin and offers protection from build-up of bacteria, clogged pores, acne, and environmental factors that harm the skin.

Last but Not Least

Use a sunscreen.  If you see light outside, your skin needs one. Be faithful; form a habit. It will save you from wrinkles at the least and skin cancers at the worst.
